How Much Does a SOC 2 Penetration Test Cost in 2026?
Real 2026 penetration testing prices by scope, sourced from vendors who publish them — plus what drives cost, why the cheapest AI tier can fail your audit, and the hidden fees buyers discover late.
Penetration testing is one of the few compliance line items where almost nobody publishes an honest number. Most vendor pages say "it depends on scope" and route you to a sales call, and the ranges that do circulate — $5,000 to $50,000 and similar — are wide enough to be useless for budgeting. So we went and collected the prices vendors actually publish. Everything below is sourced, every figure links to where we found it, and where no credible source exists we say so rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
The short version: among vendors who publish prices, a single-scope test on a web application or API generally starts between $3,000 and $5,000. Human-led testing scoped for a compliance framework lands closer to $10,000. Multi-scope engagements covering an application plus external network and cloud configuration run higher. And the cheapest tier on the market — autonomous AI testing at $500 to $3,500 — carries a real risk of not being accepted as SOC 2 evidence at all, which makes it the most consequential decision in the whole purchase.

Two caveats that materially change these numbers. Synack notes that "The Synack Platform is required to purchase any of the testing products and is a separate line item" — so $10,283 is the test, not the all-in cost. And every figure above is a starting price for the scope described. When you compare quotes, confirm what the platform, retest, and report deliverables add.
Read the AI row with the next section in mind. It is the cheapest tier by a wide margin and the one most likely to create an audit problem.
For a SOC 2-specific scope, Blaze Infosec's SOC 2 listing starts at $4,999 and describes an average duration of 5 to 25 person-days depending on scope — which is a more useful way to think about price than a flat range, because person-days is what you are actually buying.
A note on what we could not source
Three things you will see confidently asserted elsewhere that we found no credible basis for, and therefore will not publish:
- A stage-banded price table (seed / Series A / Series B). No vendor or research report publishes penetration test pricing by funding stage. Blaze offers unspecified discounts for pre-seed and seed companies; no number is attached.
- An "average" SOC 2 penetration test price. There is no benchmark study of SOC 2 penetration test pricing. Every range in circulation is an unsourced vendor assertion, so treating any of them as a market average would be inventing a statistic.
- A standalone retest fee. Every vendor above that publishes prices bundles retesting. The $2,000–$5,000 standalone figure appears only in aggregator blog posts, never on a rate card.
What actually drives the price
Scope, measured in assets. This is the dominant variable. Synack's tiers are bounded by asset count — up to 25 unauthenticated web apps or 100 host IPs at $10,283, rising to 50 apps or 250 IPs at $27,120. Sprocket's $15,000 tier covers 20 external hosts. Astra defines the unit usefully: "If you have a SaaS app, the entire app with all its APIs and underlying cloud is 1 target."
Authenticated versus unauthenticated testing. Note in Synack's tiers that 25 unauthenticated web apps price the same as one low-complexity authenticated app. Testing behind a login, across multiple user roles, is where the real labor sits — and where the findings that matter live.
Person-days. Blaze publishes 5 to 25 person-days for web and SaaS scopes and 5 to 15 for API testing. Affordable Pentesting states most SOC 2 tests complete in 3 to 7 business days.
Day and hour rates. Budget Security is the only vendor we found publishing its own tester-day rate: $985 per tester-day. Blaze publishes $250 to $300 per hour. Those two figures are the most useful tool in this article for comparing quotes: divide any fixed price by them and you have the tester-days or hours you are actually being sold.
Assessment window and tester count. Synack's $4,181 AI tier runs a 4-to-5-day window; $10,283 buys a 5-day window with one human tester; $27,120 buys a team across a 14- or 365-day window. Duration and headcount, not tooling, explain most of the spread.
Retest inclusion. Most price-publishing vendors include it: Sprocket offers unlimited retests, Blaze includes one round of fix validation free within 90 days, and Affordable Pentesting offers a retest on originally scoped assets within 90 days. Confirm it is in your statement of work — this is a real cost difference between otherwise similar quotes.
Multiple frameworks. If you are pursuing SOC 2 and ISO 27001 together, one vendor estimate puts the uplift at standard cost plus 15 to 30%.
Lead time is a hidden constraint. Rhino Security Labs notes its schedule "can be filled as much as 2-6 weeks out." If your observation period starts next month, book now.
The cheapest option is the one most likely to fail your audit
This is the section that matters more than the price table.
Autonomous AI penetration testing is genuinely the cheapest tier available — $500 to $3,500 against roughly $10,000 for human-led testing scoped to a framework. It is also the tier auditors are most likely to reject.
The sourcing here is consistent across 2026:
- Netragard, February 2026: "Auditors may reject assessments that rely heavily on automated tools, including autonomous AI pentesting platforms." The reasoning is that automated tooling "cannot evaluate business logic flaws, chained attack scenarios, or complex authorization bypass techniques."
- ComplyJet, June 2026: "Automated-only reports are not sufficient. Auditors need human-driven adversarial testing. AI-only or scanner-only outputs can be rejected." (source)
- soc2auditors.org: "A scan-only report fails as SOC 2 evidence because they list CVEs without showing exploitability or business risk." (source)
- Sherlock Forensics, April 2026: "Running Nessus or Qualys against your infrastructure is a vulnerability scan, not a penetration test." (source)
And a price floor from a tier-one firm that publishes no prices at all. NetSPI: "Any pentest on a medium-sized application with multiple user roles listed at $4,000 is probably not a true penetration test." (source) DeepStrike puts it more bluntly: "Under $4K tests are usually just automated scans."
The arithmetic is unforgiving. Saving $6,000 on an AI-led test that your auditor declines means buying a second test, remediating on a compressed schedule, and potentially pushing your report. A delayed SOC 2 report delays every enterprise deal waiting on it, which is a far larger number than the saving that caused it.
None of which makes AI testing worthless. It is a reasonable continuous-security tool between annual tests. It is a poor substitute for the annual test itself, and it should not be bought as one without your auditor's explicit agreement.
The platform-bundled pen test
Worth knowing if you already pay for a compliance platform: none of Vanta, Drata, Secureframe, or Thoropass publishes a price for bundled penetration testing. Some plans do include one. Where an included test is delivered by automated or autonomous tooling, read it against the four sources above before treating it as equivalent to a manual engagement — an included AI test and an included manual test are different products with different audit outcomes, and only one of them reliably clears the bar. Ask your platform which one you are getting, and get the answer in writing.
What SOC 2 actually requires
Briefly, because the answer is more nuanced than either camp claims.
No Trust Services Criterion mandates penetration testing, and CPA firms say so directly — Linford & Co, an audit firm, answers the question with "Again, the simple answer is no" (note that post dates to 2021, though the underlying criteria have not changed on this point).
What CC4.1 does say is that management uses various ongoing and separate evaluations, "including penetration testing," alongside independent certifications and internal audit. Penetration testing is named as an example of the expected practice. Combined with criteria covering threat monitoring and logical access, the practical result is that most auditors expect a recent third-party test — and your enterprise customers will ask for it regardless of what the criteria technically require.

Timing matters as much as the test. Run it before or at the start of your Type II observation period, remediate high and critical findings, and collect retest evidence before fieldwork opens.

How to scope so you don't overpay
Align the test boundary to your SOC 2 system boundary. Scoped too broadly, you pay to test systems outside the audit. Scoped too narrowly, the auditor considers something in scope that you did not test. This single alignment is where most waste or exposure occurs.
Count your assets before requesting quotes. Applications, whether each requires authenticated testing, how many user roles, external IPs, cloud accounts. Vendors price on these; arriving with the count converts a discovery call into a comparable quote.
Specify report requirements in the statement of work. Recognized methodology — PTES, NIST SP 800-115, or OWASP WSTG — plus CVSS-rated findings, remediation guidance, and an attestation letter.
Get retest terms in writing, including the window. Free within 90 days and free within 45 days are different products.
Ask the vendor whether their reports have been accepted by SOC 2 auditors, and whether the lead tester will join a call with yours if questions arise.

Where this sits in your total SOC 2 budget
A directory aggregating data from 171 CPA firms puts the penetration test line item at $8,000 to $30,000 within a total SOC 2 program — useful for proportion, though it is a self-published directory rather than peer-reviewed research. One benchmark to explicitly set aside: Pentera's State of Pentesting 2025 found US enterprises spend an average of $187,000 annually on penetration testing, about 11% of a $1.77M security budget. That survey covered 500 CISOs at organizations with more than 3,000 employees. It is a real, well-sourced figure and it tells you nothing about what a fifty-person SaaS company should budget. We include it only because it circulates without that caveat.
The bundled alternative
Given how much of the above is about avoiding a line item you discover late, it is worth noting that the penetration test does not have to be a separate purchase at all.
Agency's startup compliance program is all-in from $2,500 and includes both the SOC 2 audit and an independent penetration test — described on the page in exactly these terms: "An independent pen test, included — not a line item you discover and pay for separately."
