How Do I Know If My WhatsApp Account Is Hacked?

What Is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a popular messaging app that connects to the internet to send messages, images, audio, or video. The app’s draw is that the cost is significantly less than text messaging, making it an app of choice for many international users and those with limited data.

Signs You’ve Been Hacked

WhatsApp goes to great lengths to ensure the legitimacy and security of your WhatsApp chats. The application employs end-to-end encryption, a secure communication method that prevents third parties from accessing data while it’s being transmitted.

However, that doesn’t mean that WhatsApp servers and accounts are immune to hacking. If you notice strange signs that someone has logged into your account without permission, keep reading to learn what to do.

1.You Don’t Recognize Your Activity

If you see WhatsApp messages you don’t remember sending, that is a sign that you’ve been hacked. The hacker may send phishing attempts to your contacts or try to gain personal information from them.

These phishing attempts may include links to viruses and malware. Contact your friends and family through a different messaging platform to inform them you’ve been hacked on WhatsApp.

The hacker may become desperate or even lock you out of your account once they realize you know about their presence.

2. Your Contact Information Has Been Changed

You may have been hacked if you check your contact information on WhatsApp and notice that your name, about section, or phone number has changed.

You can review this information by following these steps on your phone:

  1. Tap on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select your Profile at the top of the menu.
  4. Review your information.

What To Do If You’ve Been Hacked

If you’ve been hacked, your next step is to secure your account.

The steps below detail how to implement two-step verification, also known as two-factor authentication. Two-step verification adds an additional security measure that will protect your account from being accessed by someone else.

  1. Tap on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Click Two-step verification.
  5. Tap Enable
  6. Type a 6-digit PIN code.
  7. Tap Next.

Now, whenever you enter WhatsApp, you need to type in the PIN code to authenticate that it is you.

This helps keep your messages safe while locking out the hacker accessing your WhatsApp.

Keep Your Digital Info Private

Hackers can extract private details from your hacked WhatsApp account. They may reuse your cracked password to log into more of your accounts, like bank and other social media apps.

That is why protecting your information in all aspects is so important. Your devices hold much information about you, and hackers know that.
